There is an interesting story behind it. In 1947, they held the first Edinburgh International Festival. However, only some theater groups were invited to perform. Not on the performing list, eight theater groups arrived in Edinburgh. They couldn’t perform at the festival. Not wanting to give up, they found other places in the city to put on their shows. Much to everyone’s surprise, their shows became a hit. That was how the Edinburgh Fringe Festival started. It has been held every year since then.

That was how the Edinburgh Fringe Festival started.
Fringe Festival 是「被排除在外的人自己另外辦的」—— 它是因為國際藝術節而誕生的，但正好是它的「外圍」（fringe ＝ 邊緣），不是它的一部分。
「因它而起」和「屬於它」是兩件完全相反的事。
第 27 題：漏看了圓餅圖。

——保證中間沒有中斷，所以「已經存在七十幾年」成立。
閱讀題只要看到具體年份，先在旁邊寫下「距今幾年」，通常就是某一題的答案。

文章寫 about 400,000 people ＝ 四十萬人。
million ＝ 一百萬，millions of ＝ 好幾百萬。四十萬連一百萬都不到。

NOT 題不能用「感覺」選，一定要四個都查。 只查到自己認得的那一個就下筆，就會像這題一樣選到 (A)。

票的張數

最後一段講了很多和票有關的事：有免費節目、大部分要買票、有的 35 鎊、多數約 10 鎊。
資訊很多，容易讓人覺得「票的部分都講過了」。
但通篇沒有任何一個「賣出多少張」的數字。
How much（多少錢）和 How many（多少張）是兩個不同的問題
——讀選項要讀到疑問詞。
因為 children’s shows 在文字裡只出現一次、而且被夾在一長串名詞中間：
There are theaters, music, comedies, children’s shows and more.
一口氣讀過去，很容易滑掉。
但圓餅圖上白紙黑字寫著 children’s shows 5%。
→ 這題的教訓：圖表和文字是「兩份證據」，查資料時兩邊都要看。
文字漏掉的，圖表常常補得回來。
要記住的觀念
- 看到年份，立刻在旁邊寫「距今幾年」。 這是最常出題、也最好算的一種線索。
- NOT 題／EXCEPT 題：四個選項全部要查，查到就劃掉。 剩下唯一沒被劃掉的才是答案。 絕對不能只查一個就下筆。
- 圖表也是文章的一部分。 選項提到年份、百分比、數量時，答案通常在圖表裡而不在文字裡。
- 兩組容易混的問法：
How much（多少錢）↔ How many（多少個）
「因它而生」↔「屬於它」（第 26 題的 (C)）
換一個字，問的就是完全不同的事。 - 數字要換算單位再比。 400,000 ＜ 1,000,000， 所以 about 400,000 people 不能說成 millions of people。
- 圓餅圖的比較要看數字，不要看扇形大小。 comedy 34% ＞ theater 27%， 圖上兩塊看起來差不多，但數字差了 7 個百分點。

句首出現 V-ing 或 Not V-ing 而沒有主詞時，它的主詞就是後面那個主詞。

(C) 又是一題只能在圖表裡找到答案的——再次證明圖表要看。

文章寫 only some theater groups were invited to perform（只有部分劇團被邀請）、
Not on the performing list（不在演出名單上）。
(A) 錯：文章寫 eight theater groups arrived in Edinburgh，他們有到，只是不能演。
(C) 錯：他們的表演後來 became a hit（大受歡迎），品質沒問題。
(D) 錯：文章沒提到錢的問題。
