查字典要「代進原句唸」——remote 在這裡形容的是爸爸，不是距離

【故事】 My dad seldom talked to me. I used to think he was remote to me. One day I had a terrible stomachache and cried out for help, and he hurried into my room. He took me to the hospital right away. After I woke up in the hospital, it looked like he cried. At that moment, I knew he really loved me.
Kent found several meanings in a dictionary. Which one should he choose?
- (A) Far away in time.
- (B) Not possible to happen. ← 我的答案
- (C) Very different from something.
- (D) Not friendly or interested in people. ← 正確答案
錯在哪裡
這種題目要選的是「在這個句子裡用的是哪一個義項」。
唯一的判準是：代進原句，看它形容的那個東西合不合。
原句是：I used to think he was remote to me.
remote 形容的是 he ＝ 我爸爸，是一個「人」。
(B) Not possible to happen（不可能發生的） ——這個義項只能形容「事情、機會、可能性」：
a remote chance ＝ 微乎其微的機會、a remote possibility。
但「一個人不可能發生」是講不通的。
錯因：只確認了「這個選項是不是 remote 的意思之一」， 沒有確認「它能不能用來形容人」。
正確解法
he was remote to me → remote 形容的是
he ＝ 爸爸（人） → 只留下
能形容「人」的義項
形容詞題的第一步永遠是「它修飾誰」。
找到被修飾的名詞是「人」，就可以先刪掉所有只能形容事物的義項。

既然要被推翻的是「冷淡」這個印象，那 remote 就是「冷淡、不親近」→ (D)。
seldom talked to me（很少跟我說話）是最直接的證據
——它就寫在 remote 的前一句。
- ✗(A) Far away in time.（時間上很遙遠的）
這個義項用在 the remote past（遙遠的過去）。
代進去：「我以為他在時間上離我很遠」——講不通。 而且爸爸和我是同時代的人。 - ✗(B) Not possible to happen.（不可能發生的）
這個義項用在 a remote chance／possibility，
形容的是「機會、可能性」這種抽象事件。
代進去：「我以為他不可能發生」——完全不成句。 - ✗(C) Very different from something.（和某物非常不同）
這個義項通常寫成 remote from ＝ 與……相去甚遠
（His story is remote from the truth.）。
代進去：「我以為他和我很不一樣」—— 語意勉強可讀，但和下文對不上：後面推翻的是「他不關心我」，不是「他和我不像」。 - ✓(D) Not friendly or interested in people.（冷淡、不親近人的）
代進去：「我以前以為他對我很冷淡」✓
前一句 seldom talked to me 是原因，後面整段是推翻 → 完全吻合。
要記住的觀念
- 「查字典選義項」題，四個選項通常都對——差別在「這一句用哪一個」。 做法：一個一個代回原句唸，唸不通的刪掉。
- 形容詞先看「它修飾誰」。 修飾人 → 只留能形容人的義項；修飾事物 → 只留能形容事物的。 這一步通常就能刪掉一半。 （第 2 冊 7/31 第 3 題 totally 也是先問「這個副詞修飾誰」。）
- 證據常常就在生字的前一句或後一句。 這題的 seldom talked to me 就緊貼在 remote 前面。
- used to ＋ 原形V ＝ 以前……（現在已經不是了）。
看到 used to，就知道後面一定會翻轉，這個字本身就是劇情提示。
注意區分：used to V（以前常……）／ be used to ＋ V-ing（習慣於……）／ be used to V（被用來……）。 - remote 的常見搭配一起記：
a remote village ＝ 偏遠的村莊（空間）
the remote past ＝ 遙遠的過去（時間）
a remote chance ＝ 微乎其微的機會（可能性）
a remote person ＝ 冷淡的人（人）
remote control ＝ 遙控器（名詞）
核心概念都是「距離很遠」，只是「遠」的對象不同。

seldom 放在一般動詞前面、be 動詞後面。

還有一個時態值得注意：
After I woke up in the hospital, it looked like he cried.
整段都是過去式（talked、had、cried out、hurried、took、woke、knew）
——敘事文的時態一致，是很好用的檢查點。

看解答
1. (B) 偏遠的。remote 修飾的是 village（地方）→ 空間上的遠。
而且後面接 in the mountains（在山裡），更確定是地理位置。
和本題對照：同一個字 remote，修飾「人」是冷淡、修飾「地方」是偏遠。
2. (C) 親切友善的。warm 修飾的是 person（人）→ 只能是個性。
而且後面那句 always says hello to everyone 就是證據。
warm 正好是 remote（冷淡）的相反詞，可以一起記。
兩題再次驗證同一個做法：先看它修飾誰，再看前後句的證據。
不需要背下一個字的所有意思，只要會判斷「這裡用哪一個」。
我的原始作答
當時選了 (B) Not possible to happen，紅筆訂正為 (D) Not friendly or interested in people。
這題的固定動作：看到「字典裡有好幾個意思，該選哪一個」，
先用筆把生字修飾的那個名詞圈起來。
然後把四個義項一個一個「代回原句」唸出聲——唸不成句的立刻刪。
